Hite Receives Prestigious Fulbright Honor

(Spring 2006) Merideth Hite proudly announces being named a 2006-2007 Fulbright Fellow and plans to accept the grant and travel to Germany this August. The Fulbright Program was founded by Senator J. William Fulbright (Arkansas) and began in 1946 as the prestigious and highly competitive scholarship and grant competition for studies or research abroad. Ms. Hite will participate in a five-week language immersion course, followed by an orientation and a two semester study at the Staachliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen. A small black-forest town, Trossingen (a city often called “Musikstadt”) prides itself on its long-standing musical culture. The Hochschule für Musik has the largest early music institute in Germany and also a long list of distinguished faculty and guest artists. Merideth will study modern oboe under the tutelage of Professor Nicholas Daniel, a world-renowned oboe soloist and conductor. Also, due to the school’s highly diversified curriculum, Merideth has also been invited to study baroque oboe and participate in the institute for early music under Professor Martin Stadler, as well.

Ms. Hite’s grant proposal underscores the importance of cultural exchange between the ever-evolving musical (oboe) worlds of America and Europe. She looks forward to learning more about her own style by being an advocate for it abroad.

The Fulbright grant includes: all travel expenses, Euro 715 monthly stipend, Euro 250/semester for incidentals, Euro 150 for baggage and connecting travel, comprehensive health insurance for the grantee, an orientation meeting in Frankfurt/Main, the five-week language course, and other benefits. Ms. Hite will return to the US in July 2007.
